The Academic Centre brings together the libraries of St Mary's College and Newman College, and the shared library continues to develop to support the study and wider reading of current residents.

There are some special collections in the areas of Irish studies, Manuscript studies and medieval art, and Australiana. Everything is searchable at the 'Library' link above.

Irish studies collection

The Newman College Irish collection was formed in 1924 with a bequest to the College. The initial collection comprised books and pamphlets, many in the Irish language, from the personal library of Dr Nicholas Michael O’Donnell.

The descendants of Nicholas O'Donnell have recently loaned to the Academic Centre two of his scrapbooks of newsclippings, letters and photographs. These have been digitised with generous support from the Embassy of Ireland as part of their support for events to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising. In the days around the Rising, Nicholas captured news of events in Dublin as reported in Melbourne newspapers like the Argus. The scrapbooks are available here for download:

volume 1, December 1911 - May 1916

volume 2, May 1916 – January 1920
